August

SSI Amateur Open – The inaugural event took place in 1970 to bring together golfers from the San Juan and Southern Gulf Islands. It is always the 2nd weekend in August and features Men’s and Ladies’ Divisions. It is open to all golfers and entries have come from as far away as Sweden. Although it is individual stroke play, you may enter as a foursome. The field is divided into two groups, each playing 18 holes at either 8:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. the first day and reversing those times on the Sunday. A shotgun start is used. Trophies are awarded to the Low Gross and Low Net winners in each division and there are great skins prizes. A dinner is held on Saturday, after the first day of the competition. Awards and prizes are presented immediately after golf on Sunday. The SSI Open begins with a ‘horse race’ team event on Friday afternoon for those who wish to participate. In this event, the highest scoring teams drop off as the game moves from the first to the ninth hole where the final two teams battle for the win. Players are allowed a practice round on the Friday prior to the tournament.

North/South – Scheduled for the last weekend in August, this is a true mixer open to all golfers. Players register individually and are assigned to either the North Team or the South Team. Two players from the North play in a foursome with two players from the South. As this is our major club fundraiser of the year, the only prize is the pride of having your team’s name added to the trophy. The format is a step aside scramble with a variety of stroke saving options available on the course. It is followed by an auction of coveted artwork and treasures donated by our members. It begins with coffee at 9 a.m. and ends with appetizers and drinks during the auction.
